I noticed an interesting little phrase myself. Maia and Leie
have "nictitating membranes", the kind of clear, secondary,
protective eyelids reptiles have. It looks like human
reproduction isn't the only thing the Founders tinkered
with...

It's an adjective. A "laggard" is someone or something that
lags behind.

Yup, probably one of the domesticated species humans brought
with them from Earth.
