Well, in a nutshell, the Enterprise encounters a race of aliens that speaks
entirely in a historical context. That is, they cite examples of famous
incidents from their history in order to communicate.
For example, there was a legendary hero named Darmok, who encountered a
great beast on the island of Tanagra. He defeated the beast with the aid of
(it seems) a former enemy, Gilad. So when one of this race says "Darmok and
Gilad at Tanagra," he means to propose an alliance.
It was a very nifty conceit. I'm sure someone can expand upon this example,
if you want.
