It's been many years since I've seen it, but here's what I
remember. Basically, the Enterprise D crew contact an alien
race with a particularly weird language they couldn't translate,
and hostilities ensue. The aliens recited the phrase "Darmok
and Jilad (sp?) at Tinagra," then beamed Picard and the alien
captain down to a wilderness planet. Picard eventually figures
out the alien language, with the help of the crew, who puzzed
and puzzed 'til their puzzlers were sore. (BTW, that was from
an entirely different weird alien language, from "The Grinch
Who Stole Christmas" :-) ) They eventually figure out that
the language...

was their great hero, and he had a big fight with another
warrior, Jilad, until they slew a big monster together, and
became great friends. The aliens thought that repeating that
bonding experience with their captains would soothe tensions
between the two ships, and teach Picard their language.
A plausible alien language? Probably not, but at least the idea
was pretty creative.
