Same reason the Germans call Kypros "Zypern" (or is that the Swedes?
<possibly confused>), or the French call the English Channel "La Manche", or
the English call Uluru "Ayer's Rock".
We've got our own name for it... the fact that in the case of the
Netherlands, that international common name happens to be part of the
country is irrelevant, it's just what we call it.
(Well, I try to remember to say Netherlands, but I find "Tulipped Windmilled
Recovered-from-the-sea Dope And Sex Land" rolls off the tongue so much more
easily... <wink>)
