Thanks Ronn!  That says it so much better than I have.  And I forgot about
the 1903 launch being self powered--I think they just used some wooden
rails on the beach at Kitty Hawk.  Come to think of it, that might be why
they went to the beach in the first place--smooth soft ground for takeoffs
& landings.
