Let me start by re-quoting the first line of your reply: "If I were the USSR 
and knew that I would loose in the event that the forces on
the other side would invade my side"

This is an assumption that they thought the West wanted to invade them.  If 
they were simply massing the troops as a defensive force, why would they 
declare that they intended to be an offensive force?
