Not my thing but here is what I know:
Placenta gets rid of bilirubin (major step involves liver enzyme Glucuronyl
transferase). At birth liver not quite ready to take over so bili goes up in
all babies. If liver more immature or source of bili increases (hemolytic
anemia - common in neonates) bili goes up too much. The UV stimulates liver
production of enzymes prob via Vit D but not sure about the last
