I passed on that movie - co-workers at MS who went to see it railed about
the misogyny and manipulative plot - but stuff like the above had me
pondering...
It should be pretty quick to throw together a utility for some common subset
of Linux + X that can be bound via a parameter file to any old command line
utility and provide a groovy interface. So rather than merely typing "ls
-lrt" you can double-click an icon and then - via groovy flashing pulsating
rotating whatsits, pick the holy flags of invocation. And pop up a window
for text parameters that reveals typed characters - in 30pt Helvetica, of
course - using a left-to-right pixel-level wipe. Oh, and there's a great
walloping huge "Execute!" button with a flashing red border.
Useless in general, but the IRIX 3D filesystem navigator made it big in
Jurassic Park. And at least one recent episode "The Outer Limits" (or some
equivalent) showed a sysadmin carefully regarding his Matrix screen saver
for salient details regarding the system status. Release it under GPL, get a
cult following, and you too can be immortalized in next year's
geek-hacker-wannabe movie.
