Speaking of bad films, did anyone catch "Ape!" on American Movie Classics last
weekend? It's a hilariously bad movie about a giant ape that attacks South Korea (!?),
made in 1977 or thereabouts and starring Joanna Kerns (the mom from Growing Pains,
then known as Joanna de Varona).
The ape costume is horrible. His rubber fingers don't move, so during his destructive
rampage he slaps things instead of punching or grabbing them. His face also doesn't
move, so his mouth is permanently open.
The guy inside the suit seems to be trying to "move like a gorilla," but in the scenes
where he tries to grab passing helicopters (over and over and over), he looks more
like he's performing some bizarre monkey dance.
And the scene where he "wrestles" an obviously rubber giant shark in the ocean is just
painful.
It will be on again at 10 p.m. EST Saturday, June 30. If you like bad monster movies,
don't miss it.
