Trial by jury

A friend of mine who lives in the UK says the British government is
considering abolishing trial by jury for many crimes because the jury
system there is so f****ed up. it's run almolst like military conscription
or something, lots of educated people can avoid jury duty leaving it to
those least able to handle it and public outcries that juries are too
stupid to try a case. Anybody following this? It sounds appalling.
