Well, the framework I'm thinking of for "time to make a difference" is 100
to 200 years. Indeed, we have very different guesses about space programs.
For me, and a number of other physicists, the space program is a shining
example of long plateaus in technical development.  I would guess that
manufacturing in space will still be less than 0.1% of the economy in 100
years.

Actually capitalists like that very much.  Corporate research is limited to
very few companies.  It is development that is favored.
