> I've watched the various Dutch newsreports, the Belgian news, the BBC,
> the world Service, and CNN.
Did you notice the huge difference between BBC coverage and the coverage on
other networks?
The other networks (Dutch public and commercial, Belgian, German, French,
CNN) went on and on, continuously repeating themselves. None of them wanted
to end a news program just in case they might not be able to immediately
report new developments. Especially Dutch reporters were there usual nervous
selves, regularly not knowing what to do next, going through their papers,
talking to people outside our view, and going "and next we have, er, er,
just a moment, er, ah, another message from our reporter in Washington".
An other thing was Dutch networks showing footage from CNN, Fox, or ABC,
complete with the original English commentary, and then translating as it
went. The result: two reporters talking simultaneously, one in English, one
in Dutch. The effect of that: almost impossible to follow what is being
said.
All other programs were cancelled (with one exception: the broadcasting of a
soccer match...) so news programs could be on the air continuously.
The BBC's approach was a pleasant change. Begin a news program, report what
happened, add a few analyses, end news program, continue with the regular,
scheduled programming. Apparently the BBC reasons that there is no need to
just keep repeating themselves -- if there would be any new developments,
they could always interrupt the scheduled programs.

European terrorism is something different: what happens here could be
considered more or less "local issues" (ETA in Spain, IRA in UK/Ireland).
The attack on the US is a case of international terrorism, very probably
originating in the Middle East. European countries are far less involved in
that region than the US, which makes the likelihood of a similar large scale
attack in Europe considerably less. If there are terrorist attacks, I think
they will probably be directed at specifically US targets, such as embassies
or the local branch of some large US company.
