In English, the region is generally spelled "Kashmir."

The region is actually nominally part of India, but after one of the
Indo-Paksitan Wars was left divided by a Line of Control that leaves most
of Kashmir in India, but a small mountainous slice in Pakistan, and a small
postage stamp of Kashmir in the PR of China.

It is unclear what option the predominantly Muslim Kashmiris would prefer -
union with India, union with Pakistan, or independence. A particularly
active group of rebels, however, advocates union with Pakistan, with
Paksitan's support.
