Perhaps--only a guess-- because "they all look alike to us"?
(Think of the news stories about Indians who have been targeted by some who
wanted to take their hatred out on Arabs.)
Or perhaps it was just the fact that it was New York City, where drivers

God bless America,
Land that I love!
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America!
My home, sweet home.
