Jeroen,

Opus the penguin was a character in a comic strip called "Bloom County", 
which was later titled Outland.  The strip ran in the newspapers here for I 
believe, 10-15 years.  It was very popular in the 80's, but it probably never 
reached the same heights as Peanuts or Calvin and Hobbes.  And before you 
point it out, we know he looks more like a Puffin than a Penguin :)  Bill the 
Cat is another character from the same strip.
