What is "stress atavism"?
The reversion to a non-sentient animal state when a sentient being is under stress.
Symptoms might include a loss of higher tool use ability or the ability to speak a higher language. In Startide Rising, for a dolphin, this meant a loss of the ability to enunciate in Anglic or Trinary.
A form of devolution.
