As others have said, a national ID card is no different from a drivers license, a Social Security card or a passport. I really don't see how that will infringe on anyone's rights or freedoms. The reality is that you already have to have a drivers license or similar ID to use checks, credit cards, get a hotel room, rent a car, get into a bar, etc, etc, etc... If you are stopped in your car and you don't physically have your drivers license with you, you can be ticketed for not carrying the license. There is no difference other than in peoples perceptions.
My fear would be that obtaining and using this card would be an exercise in redundancy and bureaucracy. The Federal Government does LOVE it's paperwork and bureaucracy. Now, if the government could create a national ID card and tie in all of those stupid supermarket "loyalty" discount cards so that I can reduce my wallet size by 75% - now that would impress me! :-) > > Bush administration (as well as the Brits) looking into a > national id card > > system.
