Let's not forget Noriega, Suharto and all those other little problems... As pointed out in the article Jon posted earlier, the biggest problem hasn't been how they were cultivated, but how the ties were severed. While I don't agree that anyone should have to carry the burden that article suggested for the US, some more controlled exit strategy would have made a big difference. One wonders what would happen in S Korea, Taiwan, Israel, Columbia, Saudi Arabia/Kuwait etc etc if the US walked away today in the same way they did in the 50s (E.Europe & Cuba), 60s & 70s (SE Asia), and 80s (Iraq and Afghanistan).
