Curiously enough, some denizens of another list I frequent,
which is normally rabidly pro-freedoms, are saying 'nothing
to see here, folks; move along; go on with your lives'.

I don't like any part of it, m'self.
Ken Coar,

What exactly is the problem here? They did something (paying for a large
number of stamps with cash) that was at the least, out of the ordinary.
They then made another request (no American flags) which is also, to say
the least, out of the ordinary (not to mention contemptible, but that is
not a crime - although it does tell you how pathetic the anti-war left is
that they refuse to use stamps with the symbol of their country). This
caused the postal worker to be, naturally, suspicious. I would certainly
have been suspicious. These are difficult times. Had some people been a
little _more_ suspicious on September 10th, 3000+ people would still be
alive today. In fact, let's go farther. The mail service has been used as
a method of terrorist attack. Postal workers more than anyone else in this
country save airline workers, are and _should be_, suspicious of
out-of-the-ordinary activities. What did your "new McCarthyism" add up to?
They were questioned for a little while by various authorities and let
on their way. No harm was done to them. At all. This is the system
working perfectly well. Now, I'm willing to bet that this site isn't even
going to mention the numerous well-documented incidents of people on
college campuses expressing views _supportive_ of the war and their country
who have been faced with punishment, or even suspension from their
positions, because of their beliefs. That would involve admitting things
that a site dedicated to attacking "new McCarthyism" isn't all that likely
to do, I would guess.
