The Autobahns/Autostrada are the only > safe places to travel at high speed, and they're largely unrestricted > or crowded. Then you should see the Dutch highways. The speed limit there is 120 km/h (less in some places) and they are crowded. During rush hour, there are so many traffic jams they most of them do not even get listed on the radio anymore -- they are only referred to as "the usual traffic jams". Many of the traffic accidents here happen on highways, and are caused by drunk driving, tailgating and speeding (you would be surprised to see how many people think they can still do 120 km/h in dense fog with a visibility of less than 100 meters). The added problem here is the mentality of many drivers; many seem to believe that a road is not something to be shared but to be defended. If, for example, you want to get onto the highway, you can expect *not* to be let on to the main road because those idiots do not want you to get in line in front of them. When driving on some other road (and keeping to the speed limit) it frequently happens that someone will come up behind you (exceeding the speed limit) and will start tailgating, flashing his lights and honking his horn to get you to drive faster too. At the first opportunity they will pass you by. Does that behaviour really help them? No, because you will meet them again at the next traffic light; all they have won is that they are now standing still in front of you instead of behind you, waiting for the light to turn green... Not sure about other countries, but in The Netherlands, traffic is war.
