That is all nice and well in a booming economy, but what to do during a
recession. Or, to put it in other words: what if the supply of laborers
greatly exceeds the demand for them?

Assume we are in the middle of an economic recession. Business are going
belly-up all over the country, companies are laying off people by the
thousands, and I happen to have a job that IMO does not pay enough. You say
"go and get an other job", but there are no job openings. Then what?
