Nonetheless, your explanation was infinitely better than theirs, and I think their comments (as they phrased them) won't help people from these cultures see why we are so passionate about equality and individual self-worth.
On the religiousness question, I couldn't find attendance figures I trusted in the time available, so I was going on factbook figures for religious membership. It may well be that US Christians are more likely to go to church than others (though I'm not convinced that makes them more religious - it depends more on what they do from Monday to Saturday than what they do on Sunday, and there will never figures on that). I'm curious about US church attendance though - it is well known that attendance is high in the North-East, the Mid-West and the Deep South - what is it like in states like Florida, New York/New Jersey, California, Washington etc?
