That is definitely the best thing to do: erase your hard disk and start 
from scratch. I do that at least once a year. It is especially useful if 
you (like me) regularly install software, try it out and then delete it; 
such practices tend to leave a lot of obsolete files on your system.

If your system came with pre-installed software, you should either have 
gotten the CD's with the original software, or the recovery CD with your 
system. If you got neither, well, then, no offense, but: SUCKER!   :-)
