The only other environmental factor that springs to mind is physical 
location of the units - excessive vibration, heat, shocks etc.
Or a really big really bad batch of drives from the factory....

Never seen them riveted, but it wouldn't matter so much here - it is 
cheaper to buy a case with power supply than it is to buy a power supply.
