There are two brin stories that this reminds me of,

_Heart of the Comet_, where humans become altered
due to circumstances in the environment and other
culture.

??? (can't remember name) which depicts people who
modify their reproductive system to produce industrial
biotech substances.  The main character faces her
final challenges before taking on the most difficult
and rewarding profession of all:  "Mother"
