Of course, a proper skeptic would look this problem and think, "Science
and religion address wholly separate kinds of truth because the more
science knows, the more religion must find a way to make itself relevant
by staking out, or inventing, a concept of 'reality' that science cannot
by definition assail."

Historically religion has been very happy to make pronouncements about the
nature of the physical world--whenever it can get away with it--after all.

And, just to make this more on topic, I'm going to point out that the
major theme of Kiln People is that science may ultimately solve the
problems of religion, too.  In fact, the end of Kiln People offers a lot
of clues about what might happen to some of the "Old Ones" from the Uplift
universe!
