I don't depend too much on Yahoo mail, but I'v used it as a backup for years
and haven't seen reliability issues.  These days, you can even access it
with a normal e-mail client (Eudora, Outlook, etc.), which makes it far less
clumsy than using the Web interface.  When I travel, I like the Web
interface -- when I'm on a longer trip, I'll have Yahoo pull my mail off my
server at home, so I can quickly review the subjects without downloading
everything.  IMAP would let me do the same, more or less, but I haven't had
much luck with it.

IIRC, to have access to Yahoo mail via POP and SMTP, you have to accept a
certain amount of their spam, but it's easy to filter out.  And their spam
filtering (for others' spam, not their own) seems to work very well.
