I was wondering if someone could tell if (and where) I can find software to
help me with a project I have been assigned to.

Details:
An Army unit has been given disk space on a file server (running Windows
NT4). Their data is stored in the folder D:\Groups\Alpha, with a fairly
extensive directory tree under it. Directly under this Alpha directory are
thirty subfolders, named Folder01, Folder02, ..., Folder30 (not their real
names, but good enough to illustrate the problem). For each of those
subfolders it needs to be determined which users and user groups have
permissions on those folders and exactly which permissions they have. The
data has to be collected in an Excel sheet (an MS Access database will do as
well).

This can be done manually (right-click on the folder name, Properties,
Security, Permissions) but this is of course an awful lot of work (and not
exactly intellectually challenging work). For now, I only need to collect
permissions information for those folders, not for the underlying files and
folders. This may need to be done later, though.

So, the question is, does anyone know if there is software available (and if
so, where to find it) that can scan those folders and files, retrieve the
permissions information from them and store the results in either an Excel
sheet or an MS Access database?

Freeware/shareware would be nice, but since we will probably have to do this
in the future for other Army units as well, I might be able to convince the
higher-ups to buy a commercial package.

Thanks.

Jeroen
