The work the Germans are doing on self driving cars require huge 
infrastructure additions (but work quite well once the tags are in 
place), but the little light sensor based vacuum cleaners work in an 
ordinary room (don't forget pool cleaning vacuums have been self driving 
within their confined operating area for decades). I think it is because 
of the standard environment that vacuum cleaners will reach the market 
first (personally, if they keep the same light based system they use on 
the prototypes, I want one just to scare the family pets - it'll drive 
them nuts)
