Gautama was the name of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama who became Gautama Buddha. My parents are Hindus, but Buddha is considered to be one of the incarnations of Vishnu, although his motives on choosing that incarnation vary depending on your sympathies within Hinduism. The version of Hinduism chosen by my parents is very close to that of Buddhism, so I was named Gautam. Adding an a at the end of a name is a standard North Indian thing - my father is Mukund in the south and Mukunda in the north. Gautam
