This is most likely due to poor drivers. There are known issues with
W2K/Athalon/Via chipsets. Make sure you have checked out your systemboard
manufacturer(that is if you own a home-grown solution) web site for updates,
which may include VIA driver updates. 

Video is usually the culprit here. Also check for driver updates. 
If the lockups occur during gameplay, update DirectX, and possibly your
OpenGL drivers (opengl.org). 
If you have a Nvidia video card, use the latest reference drivers from
Nvidia. I also suggest a program called NVMAX (nvmax.com). This program
fixed many video card conflicts and issues related to Nvidia cards.

I also have found that my computer is less likely to lock up when it is
cool. If it starts to misbehave, I will take the cover off, and let it cool
down. This usually take care of it.

The only problems I have with compatibility are some children games.
