New evidence of the superplumes -- located beneath the south central Pacific Ocean and southern Africa -- comes from studies of seismic waves conducted by scientists at UC Berkeley and reported in the journal Science. "Emphasis so far has been on the cold down-moving subducted plates and their critical role in mantle dynamics. We think the superplumes play an important role as well," researcher Barbara Romanowicz said. "God I just love saying it though, don't you? Magma superplumes. Magma superplumes," she might've added, eyes rolling back and breath coming slightly heavier, stroking a hunk of hard lava in her lap. "Mmmm. It feels good in the mouth and sounds vaguely dirty, you know? Or like the name of some funkycool LA bar band like 'Nacho Johnny and the Magma Superplumes' or something. Or maybe it's the title of the new Wilco album or something. Magma superplumes. Mmm, science." http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2002/04/18/national1408EDT0707.DTL& nl=fix Marvin Long Austin, Texas
