Hey all,

My wife (and by extension, myself) is having a particular problem that I
would like to bring to the floor....

Julie runs a multi-lingual pre-press and production business out of the
home. What she does is takes an English publication and mates translated
copies so that all versions of the publication share the same page numbering
and general text layout. One of her current projects contains the following
set of languages: English, Spanish, French, Thai, Japanese, Korean, and
Traditional Chinese.

I am able to use all of the other translated copies except for the Chinese.
She receives the copy in Word 98 formatting. From there it needs to be
imported into Illustrator, flattened into an image file and placed into
Quark so that final copies can be made. Certain image files are to be blown
up to 700 percent so text quality is of utmost importance.

I can type in Chinese on my computer, so I know the Language Kit is acting
properly (I am using a Mac, just to be clear). Every time I try to open a
Chinese Word file, I am greeted with jumbled text. I can cut and paste into
something like Simple Text but I am afraid that Word is putting formatting
into the text so that it is not correct. I do see Chinese text, but
formatting symbols are everywhere.

My question is....Does anybody have experience with Chinese Word documents,
namely getting the text to display properly so that it may be inserted into
other programs? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (and may be
entitled to a large donation of homemade raspberry preserves from the Bos
berry patch)

Matthew Bos

PS-- Computer programs are as follows : Mac OS X, 9.1, Illustrator,
Photoshop, Quark, Acrobat, Word 98, Word X, and about 8000 fonts.
