A few days worth of e-mail and a few days of Internet access. On Thursday, Windows reported finding a bad sector on the harddisk. Recognising that it would probably get worse, I started backing up my data. Things did indeed get worse: by Saturday afternoon, there were already some 25 bad sectors. Some critical Windows files were apparently in one of those sectors, because now I cannot even boot from that disk anymore. I reformatted the drive and reinstalled Windows; that worked till I rebooted the computer. Unfortunately, I had already downloaded my e-mail by then, which then ended up in what became another bad sector. :-( The Internet access was restored on Monday (albeit through my laptop computer only) when I bought a cable modem router. Fixing the desktop PC is still a work in progress.
