Heck, *I* hadn't heard of the "commie pinko Jews".  :)

My theory, which I was hesistant to share because I didn't have as good
a grasp of the situation as I was sure some other listmembers have, was
that the Jews knew what it was to be persecuted and wanted to help
another persecuted group.  Or something like that.  (I don't mind
sharing now that there's been a better answer given.)
