The Defense Dept. to be precise. And yes, there *are* some restrictions
because of that little detail. For example, if I want to visit a country
that is listed as "unfriendly" (for example, Birma), I have to get
permission first. If a close relative would have ties with some "unfriendly"
country, chances are I would still get employed by the Dept. but not in a
position where I would have access to classified material. But other than
that, because of our liberal attitude it is not easy to find something that
could be seen as a possible risk.

I am flattered to see you think I hold a key position here, but I am not
really *that* important. :-)

But anyway, your argument still does not hold. Do you have any idea *why*
The Netherlands has a reputation for being very liberal? I cannot be
blackmailed if a relative is a hooker or a drug addict; prostitution is
*legalised* here, not criminalised like in the US (and Israel?). Further,
the possession, use and sale of drugs is to some extent tolerated, and we do
not treat drug addicts as criminals but as people who need help.

When I was hired, the MID (Military Intelligence Service) did a background
check on me, but they found nothing that would indicate I could be
blackmailed. Not even my visit to Birma or the criminal record of a close
relative was a problem. And that criminal record includes (but is probably
not limited to) theft, dealing in stolen goods, assault, illegal possession
of fire arms and murder (he was serving a nine year jail sentence for that
at the time I was hired).

Now, all that might be enough for the Israeli or US Defense Dept. to NOT
employ me, but it is not a problem in *this* country.
