At a guess, you maybe played TA before the 3.1c patch and definately 
in singple player or scirmish mode? Multiplayer TA is far faster and 
more taxing than playing with any AI, although there are some 
seriously improved AI's (Counterstrike, Mostly Harmless, Queller, 
Bloothirsty AI to name a few) out there.

And the TA mod community is alive and well. I'm current participaing 
in the O3/TADS Space Total Conversion, some quality Races are nearing 
completion...

TA's strengths are modability, natural balance, unlimited resource 
model and large scale (on many maps). It doesn't really play that 
well single player without a deacent AI, it has no story and some 
maps are poor.
