communicate with the device as if it were a new limb or sense
organ.  The kind of "telepathy" that would be possible would
really be more like radio, and transmission would require
the person to actively send their messages.  The analogy
you suggest, leaving a live microphone on in the room while
people are talking, wouldn't work very well, as they are a
very long way from being able to read thoughts by analyzing
brain wave patterns.

I have heard of research into direct brain interfaces,
applications would include giving paralyzed people direct
control over their computer's mouse cursor, etc.
