As a technician...

For the laptop, I can really only recommend brands - Sony or IBM.

For desktops...

Athlon XP processor, certainly, on a KT333 chipset motherboard. 512MB 
PC2700 RAM, preferable CAS2 although CAS 2.5 is acceptable. I'd go 
for a motherboard with an IDE RAID controller, and get say two or 
three 60-80GB hard disks. Maxtor are the only people who use 
UDMA/133, so definitely Maxtor hard disks.

For sound, a Soundblaster Audigy, for graphics one of the GeForce 4 
Ti range. Monitors, I like Belinea (Maxdata) and Eizo.
