As Julia said, a lot of it is practice. Alex had some excellent teachers, and not just at a special school. He worked with the studio that did the special effects for an entire season of Farscape. It's hard to beat that kind of experience with sci-fi 3D graphics. Also, he had access to many more tools than you do -- and tools are no substitute for skill, but they can sure make things easier. My advice is not to give up. Keep on working and practicing while you wait for a chance to go to an art school.
