June 10, 2002 Bald chicks a feather in researcher's cap An Israeli researcher has grown featherless chickens, which can survive better in hot weather and are easier to process because they don't have to be plucked, the Associated Press reported. The chickens may be commercially produced within two years and several dozen have been grown so far, said Hebrew University's Avigdor Cahaner. Cahaner made the birds by crossbreeding normal chickens with birds carrying a "necked neck" gene, which makes them go bald, AP said. The featherless fowl may be popular in developing countries where farmers can't afford expensive cooling systems. Heat can kill as many as 20 percent of chickens that don't have proper ventilation. -- Bloomberg News Copyright 2002, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
