The story is on soc.history.what-if, and is as true as I have stated it. The actual logic is confirmed in a networks class I took at SJSU, that is, the wiring being the most expensive part, and a description of phone systems throughout Europe and North America. The appearance of cellphones is in the early 80's, which may or may not coincide with observations by the industry of me and friends playing around on phones. You get together a class of gifted students, observation, at the least, is likely, if you've made any sort of investment.
I did suggest expansion of modem networks and wireless phones in 1992. You figure out the timeline and see if it works that way for you.
