The story is on soc.history.what-if, and is as true as I have stated it.  The 
actual logic is confirmed in a networks class I took at SJSU, that is, the 
wiring being the most expensive part, and a description of phone systems 
throughout Europe and North America.  The appearance of cellphones is in the 
early 80's, which may or may not coincide with observations by the industry 
of me and friends playing around on phones.  You get together a class of 
gifted students, observation, at the least, is likely, if you've made any 
sort of investment.

I did suggest expansion of modem networks and wireless phones in 1992.  You 
figure out the timeline and see if it works that way for you.
