diagram component works down to the electron level.  A diode merely allows 
current to flow in a given direction.  A mirror merely allows light to flow

No, it's the whole part of the central processor.  When an output from a 
complex IC is merely an array of bits, that is causal to other gates 
functioning, such as signalling an IO device to be ready to output a data 
stream that will arrive in the next 5 nanoseconds on the databus, a databus 
being merely a transient bit array.  The clock as a device is used to 
synchronize data flow linearly.  The same effect can be achieved with a 
centralized flash RAM consisting of a set of stacks and queues.  
Do you think i'm handwaving?  Calculators work with hardware stacks and 
queues without a central processing unit, because synchronization of 
instructions is done at the press of a button by the user.

So, why would Intel and Motorola use a cpu?  Because of automation, and a 
handy clock that will synchronize, and research and development of 
electricity that dates back to the 1970's.  Why electricity?  Nuclear EMP 
that wipes out electric circuits until the nuke hits [dunno if that's fiction 
or not].  Why is that important?  So you have time to go have sex with your 
mate before you die, or else it's gloating on the part of those who would 
like to destroy your city because it's important to them that you know who is 
destroying you.  Similar to my sentiment -- I like you to know my family 
because it is my family that is either destroying you or saving you.
