I remember such a plot in a book by Andre Norton, but
don't remember the title; the protagonist was named
Kana Karr, I think - he was following in the mercenary
footsteps of his family, but I recall that he was
hoping to prove to the alien overlords that humans
were _more_ than just swordsmen.

Since a Norton book (_Breed To Come_)was my first
SF/fantasy encounter (the school library had no more
horse, dog or jungle stories), I still have great
fondness for the "Witch World" series; even though
it's really more swords-n-sorcery than "real" SF, it's
a fun read, with some moral quandries, mild erotica
and personal angst thrown in for good measure.
