My theory about why cancer exists. Natural selection works on all things that reproduce, include species, ideas (memes), genetic programming systems, etc. Individual cells also reproduce. The logical conclusion of the cell reproducing system is cancer. A cancer cell is a virtually perfect, Immortal cell. More importantly, A cancer produces the most descendants, in fact they don't stop producing descendants until the host dies (or the host's immune system irradicates it).
