And lest anyone think that the watering-down of the fourth amendment is
something new, it's not. It's been under attack by the right for quite a
while. At the risk of sort of name-dropping, I have a friend on the House
Judiciary Committee, who often reminds me of how much the members on the
right have been seeking to take all of the teeth out of it. She also says
she misses Sonny Bono, but that's another subject.

And there's a great story about a member of that committee who passed out
proposed new language for the fourth amendment, which most of the other
members, including the ones on the right, said they thought was just
terrific. It was the original text, and most of the members hadn't even
recognized it.

Sonny apparently thought that the American people wouldn't like all that
"lawyer language" in it. But someone kindly explained that as long as he
was serving on the Judiciary Committee, he'd probably have to deal with some
lawyer language.

"Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of congress; but I
repeat myself." -Mark Twain.

While I can't agree entirely, cousin Mark's quote often seems all too
accurate.
