My only electronics tale of woe (not mine) comes from a GCSE class (14-16
year olds) where we were building a full recification circuit to convert an
AC main supply to a DC supply that could be used with a simple circuit.

Except we were using capacitors, beeeeg capacitors, and anyone who has done
some electronics knows what happens when you connect a big capacitor the
wrong way around....

*KAAAAAAAAAAAAAABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!*

It was excellent to watch! There was a yellow coloured mini-mushroom cloud
that spewed out of the breadboard and dispersed into the air. We had to
evacuate the room until the fumes had sufficiently cleared and there was
this huge yellow stain on the wall against which my classmate had been
working.

Needless to say, he was mercilessly taunted for the remainder of the course,
and the AS Electronics course that most of us took from 16-18. :)
