Well I'm more pizzed then embarrassed by the answer. They used an empty
85-foot elevator shaft at the stadium to TEST mirrors for a telescope to be
build in Texas.

I would have bet your life that they used the elevator shaft AS the
telescope itself. In fact I still believe that they did, but this is the
only reference I could find. I'm sorry I mis-represented the news, but I
really think they did at one time.
