BALI BOMB HELL
FIFTY-FOUR people were killed last night and nearly 130 injured - among
them nine Britons - after two terrorist bombs exploded on Bali. One of
the bombs ripped through the Sari Club, a nightclub at Kuta Beach on the
paradise Indonesian holiday island. Police said most of the dead were
believed to be foreigners. The other bomb went off just 250 metres from
the US Consulate in the island's capital of Denpasar. Police believe both
bombs were detonated at the same time. The blast at the Sari Club set off
a huge fire which engulfed a nearby nightclub and several other buildings
Last night a nurse treating casualties at a local hospital said: "There
are many dead, including foreigners. It's bad." American and Australian
holidaymakers were among the wounded. Eye-witnesses said windows were
blown in 500 metres away from the explosions as thousands of people fled
in terror. Police were last night sifting through the debris in an effort
to gain evidence. The blasts in Bali came just hours after a handmade
bomb went off near the Philippine Consulate on the Indonesian island of
Sulawesi. There were no casualties and police said it was not yet clear
whether the explosions were linked. Indonesian officials have denied that
militants linked to al-Qaeda are active in the country. Authorities in
Malaysia and Singapore have claimed that members of a group known as
Jemaah Islamiyah - said to be seeking to set up an Islamic state - are
based in Indonesia. Singapore has pressed Indonesia to arrest the group's
alleged leader, Abu Bakar Bashir, who lives in Indonesia. But Indonesian
officials have refused. Police and the military are now "severely
restricting" access to Bali.
