Free advice, worth every penny you paid for it:  It is hardly ever a good
idea to ask people "why" questions about their behavior, unless your goal is
to erect or reinforce walls between yourself and them.  Aside from the fact
that it may be based on a false premise, the question rarely accomplishes
anything other than fostering resentment.

You'll find, if you haven't already, that this advice is especially valuable
in relationships with children and spouses.
